Two typed index cards from the U.S. Penitentiary at Atlanta, held by the National Archives at Atlanta in Record Group 129, Records of the Bureau of Prisons, in the file unit “Atlanta Federal Penitentiary, Index to Prisoners - Combs, Lee-Contaro, Almondo.” The catalog describes the file unit, not the cards; the research for this archive found them at digital objects 66 and 68 (object 67 is a second scan of the first card). The image stored here shows the two cards together.

The first card reads: name “COMPAGNA, Louis,” No. 63773-A, alias “Lefty Louie; Little New York; Etc.” The crime is “CONSP TO INTERFERE WITH TRADE & COMM. BY VIOL., THREATS & COERCION,” the district “S-NY-NEW YORK,” and the sentence 10 years with a fine of $10,000, marked “PAID.” The date is 12-31-43, received 4-4-44, sentence begins 3-8-44, parole time 7-7-47, full time 3-7-54. The residence is “BERWYN, ILL.” A stamp reads “Transferred to U.S. Penitentiary Leavenworth, Kansas JUL 28 1945.”

The second card carries a second receipt, 7-24-48, with time beginning 7-23-48, and the residence “Chicago, Ill.” It is stamped “Discharged by Order of Court DEC 20 1948.” That is the day the Atlanta district court denied reconsideration in Compagna v. Hiatt, 82 F. Supp. 295. Ages and good-time figures are faint on parts of the card, so this page records only the clearly legible fields. The spelling “Compagna” is the card’s.
