- A description of a series of Bureau of Prisons records (Record Group 129), a United States government record, public domain under 17 U.S.C. § 105. The catalog marks the series use "Unrestricted" and access "Restricted - Possibly" for privacy (FOIA exemption b6).
The series description gives 26,283 file units dated from 3 July 1895 to 5 November 1957, as the catalog states. Nearly every file has a record sheet with name, registration number, alias, crime, sentence and dates; most have a front-and-profile identification photograph; many carry rap sheets, commitment orders, fingerprints, Bertillon measurements and correspondence logs. The records are held by the National Archives at Kansas City.
Only a sampled subset is digitized. The Leavenworth records filed in this archive are Robert Stroud’s file, the record cards for Frank Zito and Nick Circella, and Capone’s commitment papers. Searches of this series for several other names from the organized-crime record returned no file. An item in the series photographed under the name Frank Costello was not identified with the New York figure of that name and is not filed.
