- A finding aid of the National Archives and Records Administration, a United States government work. Public domain in the United States, 17 U.S.C. § 105. The underlying inmate files are federal records; access to some pages can be restricted for living people.
This is the companion to the alphabetical list. It runs register numbers 1 to 1576 with the inmate’s name beside each number. Register 1 is “BOLT, FRANK LUCAS”; register 85 is “CAPONE, ALPHONSE “SCARFACE”.” The page repeats the cautions of the alphabetical list about privacy exemptions and the 1934 to 1963 bulk dates, and adds the National Archives’ note that it does not hold records of military prisoners held on Alcatraz before 1934. The two lists were cross-checked number by number for this archive and agree.
The numbers confirmed on this page for men filed in this archive: 85 Capone; 110 Gardner; 117 Kelly; 139 Bailey; 268 Doc Barker; 325 Karpis; 594 Stroud (Robert F.; a different man, Mack Stroud, is 165); 1117 Johnson; 1518 Cohen; 1568 Carbo. The list prints only a name and a number. Dates of confinement come from the warden’s notebook pages and the case-file descriptions, and are labelled as the catalog’s data wherever they are used.
