On October 29, 1963 Valachi testified in executive session, in room 3302 of the Senate Office Building, under Senate Resolution 17. The printed note says: “A part of this testimony was made public by the members of the subcommittee on July 28, 1964, and follows below.” The excerpt is at printed pages 629 to 640 of Part 3, which are NCJRS PDF pages 699 to 712. The chief U.S. Marshal, James J. P. McShane, is listed as present.
Questioned by Jerome S. Adlerman, Valachi said: “I had one deal in 1952, Mr. Adlerman.” He described a heroin shipment from France and borrowing money for it. He said that “I didn’t want to go any deeper so I went to Tony Bender.” In the transcript Tony Bender is Anthony Strollo. He said he did this despite the organization’s rule against narcotics. A staff summary headed “Illegitimate rackets of Vito Genovese—Narcotics” follows at printed page 639.
These are sworn statements of the witness. They are not a court finding against any man he named.
