On the record

  • 1934-09-04 — The warden's notebook page (NAID 236734616) records him received at Alcatraz from Leavenworth, age 47, offense "Kidnapping & Holding for Ransom," dated Oct. 7, 1933, sentence "Life," district "W/Okla., (Okla., City)."
  • 1934-09-04 — The catalog description prints the offense as "KIDNAPPING & HOLDING FOR RANSOM (URSCHEL)."
  • 1946-09-08 — The page is stamped "TRANSFERRED SEP 8 1946" with a handwritten "to Leav"; the catalog gives a transfer on 09/08/1946 to US Penitentiary, Leavenworth.
  • 1979-03-01 — The catalog description gives a death date of 03/01/1979 at Joplin, Missouri.
  • 1933-06-17 — A staff note on the notebook page says that before the conviction recorded there he was wanted in connection with the Union Station killings at Kansas City on June 17, 1933. That is a staff statement on a prison form, not a finding; this page takes nothing about the Kansas City killings from it.

The National Archives lists Bailey at register number 139. His notebook page prints the birth date 8/23/87, which matches the catalog’s 08/23/1887. The case file, about 2,000 pages, is described in the catalog but is not digitized. The role and family fields are left empty because no record cited here states either. Offenses are given as the notebook form prints them; the “Reason for Transfer” boxes are staff opinion and are not used.
