Page 4 of the Evening Star, 17 May 1929. The story “Capone and Aide Get Year in Jail for ‘Gun-Toting’” is “Continued From First Page”; the front page is filed separately.
The continuation says that after a recess “the lawyers held a side-bar conference with Judge John E. Walsh, and afterward the two prisoners entered pleas of guilty,” and that the sentence “was the maximum prison term under the law.” It reports: “Less than 12 hours after his arrest, Alphonse (Scarface Al) Capone, Chicago gangster, was indicted by the county grand jury today on a charge of carrying a concealed deadly weapon. With him was indicted Frank Cline, also of Chicago, Capone’s alleged bodyguard.” It adds that “Capone and Cline arrived here yesterday from Atlantic City. Last night they were picked up leaving a motion picture house by two Philadelphia detectives,” and that District Attorney John Monaghan announced the trial would go forward the same day.
The page is the Associated Press account of a state prosecution in Philadelphia. It gives no street for the arrest, and this archive does not supply one.
