At the top of page 2 of The Gary American for 12 October 1928 is an item headed “Drop Charges Against the Casper Holstein Captors,” datelined NEW YORK CITY. The headline was read from the stored scan; the Library’s OCR loses most of it.

It reports that the case “came to an end Monday morning in Washington Heights court when Magistrate McQuade dismissed kidnaping charges against Rudolph Brown, 32, and Moe Monty Schubert, 30,” and that “A third alleged captor, Michael Bernstein, white, had his bond of $10,000 forfeited when he failed to appear.” It says that “Holstein refused to identify any of the three men as his abductors, in spite of the evidence obtained against them by police” (the OCR reads “refuted”), and that the men’s lawyer “made a big point of the fact that Holstein had failed to identify them.” It adds that Bernstein’s wife told police her husband had himself been kidnapped on his way to court, a story the police did not believe.

This is a newspaper report; no court record of the hearing has been opened. The page shows that no one was held on the charge at that hearing. The bond figure differs from the figures other papers printed at other stages of the case (28 December 1928; Omaha Monitor, 4 January 1929).
