Front page of the Montgomery Advertiser, Alabama, Wednesday morning, 27 May 1925. Under the headline “Chicago Gunmen Active,” a dispatch dated Chicago, May 26, reads: “Angelo Genna, gangster, feudist and political leader, was shot to death today by four gunmen who pulled alongside his speeding automobile and fired at close range with four shotguns. His assailants escaped.”
It adds that police patrolled the district that night and that the word was the killing marked vengeance for the killing of Dion O’Banion the previous December. The deck under the headline is garbled in the OCR (“Four Men Shoot Anglo Lends, Gangster and Politician”); “Anglo Lends” is the OCR’s reading of Angelo Genna.
The motive is the report’s rumor, not a finding, and the paper’s description of Genna is its own. The Evening Star’s earlier report, which has him “probably fatally wounded,” is filed separately.
