Front page of the Washington Times, Home Edition, 17 March 1930. A column headed “Al Capone Goes Free Today” carries the dateline “HARRISBURG, Pa., March 17 (I.N.S.)”: “Governor John S. Fisher today signed official release papers for Alphonse ‘Scarface Al’ Capone. The signing of the papers came at 11:25 a.m.” A second International News Service dispatch from Philadelphia follows.

The page reports that Capone was due to leave the Eastern Penitentiary after about ten months for carrying a concealed weapon. A Chicago FBI letter of March 1930 also records his release at Philadelphia on 17 March 1930 (Capone Part 24). The next day’s Washington Daily News reports that he was moved to Graterford and left from there (page 4).
