An FBI news story dated June 27, 2011, “The Chicago Mafia: Down but Not Out.”
It opens with the indictment of a Roman Catholic priest and former prison chaplain “who ministered to Chicago mob boss Frank Calabrese, Sr.” for passing jailhouse messages. It states: “Calabrese, Sr., was sentenced to life in prison in 2009 for his role in 18 gangland slayings in the Chicago area dating back to 1970.” It quotes the supervisor of the Chicago Field Office’s La Cosa Nostra squad and says that, unlike New York’s Five Families, “the Chicago mob consists of only one family, often referred to as the ‘Outfit.’”
These are the FBI’s own descriptions in a public news story. The sentencing and convictions are in the court record, United States v. Schiro (7th Cir. 2012).
