An FBI news story dated 10/01/07 under the headline “Family Secrets: Of the Murderous Kind.” The www.fbi.gov address now redirects to the FBI’s archive site, which serves it.

The story says the case began with a letter sent to the Chicago office in 1998 by the son of a Chicago mobster. That son was serving a prison sentence with his father, Frank Calabrese Sr., and “agreed to wear a wire during conversations with his father.” It describes the Chicago Outfit as “a criminal enterprise operating out of the city for more than four decades” with an organized structure and crews assigned to territories around Chicago.

“The trial for five men — Calabrese Sr., James Marcello, Joseph ‘The Clown’ Lombardo, Paul ‘The Indian’ Schiro, and Anthony ‘Twan’ Doyle — started in June and ended August 30… All five were found guilty of racketeering and related crimes September 10.” The story is the Bureau’s own account. The court record of the trial and appeal is United States v. Schiro (7th Cir. 2012).
