The viewer’s text layer for Part 01 runs to at least 400 pages (the tool stops at 400; the part is longer, and later pages were not read). “Bureau File No. 62-97929” is printed once, in the 1955 memo, and appears truncated elsewhere. The pages read include a 1955 headquarters memo summarizing the Supreme Court’s decision in Marcello v. Bonds (around viewer page 69), 1956 and 1957 “hoodlum coverage” memoranda from the New Orleans office (pp. 94-105), April-June 1961 headquarters memoranda on his removal to Guatemala and his surrender in New Orleans on 5 June 1961 (pp. 127-132), and 1989 reports from Rochester, Minnesota on his release from the Federal Medical Center on 20 October 1989 (pp. 25-41).
The 5 June 1961 memo (viewer page 131) says that at 10:25 a.m. Marcello, “recently deported to Guatemala,” surrendered himself to the Immigration and Naturalization Service in New Orleans at his motel, the Town and Country, and was taken to the U.S. Public Health Hospital complaining of chest pains. No street is printed. The 1989 reports also quote an inmate informant, who is a private person and is not named here.
Page numbers are positions in the viewer’s text dump, not printed page numbers; many names and passages are redacted. This record rests on the Vault viewer’s OCR text layer; the page image of viewer page 131, the memo of 5 June 1961, is now stored here. The OCR is poor on stamps and handwriting and many names are redacted.
