The second and final Vault part on Giancana (Chicago file 92-349, Bureau file 92-3171). It runs from December 1971, with a Las Vegas and Honolulu check on Frank Rosenthal and a gambling rumor (pp. 6-9), to a Chicago airtel of December 1993 (pp. 348-350).
A Chicago teletype (p. 39), dated 2-13-76 on its face and later marked for review on the House Select Committee’s request, is captioned “Samuel M. Giancana, aka (deceased).” It reads: “AS BUREAU AWARE, FORMER CHICAGO LCN BOSS SAM GIANCANA WAS MURDERED IN BASEMENT OF HIS OAK PARK, ILLINOIS, RESIDENCE, JUNE 19, 1975.” It says the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office obtained a search warrant for the residence after the murder and executed it on June 24, 1975. (The viewer’s OCR misreads the date and the word “boss”; the words here are read from the page image shown.) Pages 34-41 also hold Customs inquiries made after his death (10/28-31/75). The December 1993 airtel to the FBI Laboratory (p. 349) asks for a comparison of the silencers on the weapons used in the Giancana murder and in the January 20, 1983 murder of Allen Dorfman in Lincolnwood, and gives the date of Giancana’s murder as June 19, 1975.
A 1960s report copied into the file (pp. 259-261) says Paul De Lucia was then serving a three-year sentence at Terre Haute for income-tax conspiracy, was the subject of deportation proceedings, and that a source said in July 1959 that De Lucia “was at one time the head of organized crime known to him as the Syndicate in the Chicago area.” That is a source’s statement relayed by the FBI.
The teletype and the 1993 airtel give June 19, 1975 for the murder; the Church Committee report gives June 20, 1975. Both dates are reported as written. “Former Chicago LCN boss” is the Chicago office’s description, not a finding. The airtel prints the street address of his home, and that page is not stored or repeated. This archive read the page through the Vault viewer’s OCR text layer. The scans are poor; names, dates and figures can be garbled, and many names are redacted under FOIA exemptions (b6, b7C, b7D).
