Most of the serials date from 1970 and 1971. Applications for Title III surveillance describe a Brooklyn numbers and bookmaking operation “under control of La Cosa Nostra boss Joseph Colombo.” A memorandum of April 1971 reports: “Agents of our New York office arrested Joseph Anthony Colombo, Sr., ‘boss’ of the Colombo La Cosa Nostra ‘family’ shortly after noon on April 2, 1971” (the OCR drops one quotation mark). Other memoranda concern the Italian-American Civil Rights League.

These are FBI statements in Bureau memoranda and surveillance applications, labelled as such on his person page. No opened record gives his death.
