A joint report of Chicago agents dated October 18, 1930, title “Frank R. Nitto alias Frank Nitti a. Frank Novelli,” character “Income Tax.” Its synopsis says that, through a confidential informant, an independent investigator, Major Crockett, advised that the subject, with eleven associates, occupied the second floor of a “notorious rendezvous called ROAMER INN,” about five miles west of Michigan City, Indiana, over the weekend of October 4, 1930. The tip reached the Bureau through the United States Secret Service at Chicago on October 10.
The agents describe the building from outside and record that observation of the place over the weekend of October 11, 1930 “failed to indicate subject’s presence.” The report shows the Bureau working the case without success before his arrest on October 31.
The informant’s claim is relayed by the Bureau and is not confirmed in the pages read. Police and postal contacts named in the report are not recorded here. This archive read the page through the Vault viewer’s OCR text layer. The scans are poor; names, dates and figures can be garbled, and many names are redacted under FOIA exemptions (b6, b7C, b7D).
