Part 5 of the Kefauver hearings prints the Illinois sessions of September 1950 to January 1951. Owney Madden is named in two exchanges, read from the archive’s OCR of the printed pages; the session dates of the two passages were not determined for this page.
In Louis Campagna’s further testimony (pages 550–551), committee counsel Mr. Robinson asks about his visits to Hot Springs, Arkansas, which Campagna places at “maybe 4 years before I went to the penitentiary.” Robinson asks: “Do you know Owney Madden?” Campagna: “I know of him; yes, sir.” Asked if he had met him, Campagna answers: “I may have met him on the golf course,” at Hot Springs, and says Madden never played with him.
In Daniel Serritella’s testimony (page 681), in a passage about the wire service, counsel Mr. Halley asks: “Did you know Owney Madden?” Serritella: “No.” Halley asks whether he knew “that Jerry Sullivan was connected with Owney Madden”; Serritella answers “He didn’t say” and then “I never heard that.”
The passages show that the committee asked witnesses about Madden. The answers do not show any dealings between Madden and either witness, and counsel’s questions are not evidence of the facts they assume.
