The contents of Part 8 list “Grosch, Mrs. John J. (Viola) 247-258.” She testified at New Orleans on Friday, 26 January 1951, questioned by committee counsel Mr. Rice, after her former husband, the criminal sheriff of Orleans Parish, had testified. The text was read from the Internet Archive’s OCR, to about page 256.
She said she married him in 1921 and that they were divorced in 1941 (printed page 248). She testified that she bought a lock box at his direction and kept it “In the attic” (page 249), that she put cash in it, and that “when I left there, there was $150,000 in the box” (page 250). She also agreed with counsel that a recorded mortgage on their house was fictitious and described payments she made on the house loan.
Her statements are her sworn recollection about a public official and are not findings. Other private persons she named are not repeated here, and the hearing’s details of her own employment are not carried forward.
