J. E. Regan appeared in New Orleans on 25 January 1951 for Western Union, in answer to a subpoena to the company (Part 8, pp. 67-77; pp. 67-72 were read). Questioned by counsel Downey Rice, he explained the 8-A ticker, “a regular ticker that is used in quoting all commodities,” the Morse circuits worked by key, and the difference between equipped and unequipped lines.
He testified that “at this time, there are three terminal points for Continental Press in the New Orleans area”: one in New Orleans and one in Gretna, whose receivers he could not name, and a third “in the vicinity of the Fair Grounds” race track, where “that place is in operation only during the Fair Grounds meet.” Asked about the Daily Sports News, he read from a company telegram: “The applications for the leased circuits of the Daily Sports News are signed by J. E. Fogarty and in some cases J. J. Fogarty.” The telegram is Exhibit 8 (appendix p. 428). Counsel then showed him a Western Union bill to the Daily Sports News for private wires to towns in Louisiana and Mississippi; the bill was not read for this page.
The street addresses of the drops are in the testimony. They are lessees’ addresses and are not copied here. The contempt report on John J. Fogarty is filed separately.
