The Library of Congress titles this photograph “[Mafioso Joseph Valachi of the Genovese crime family, testifying about organized crime and the Mafia at a hearing of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs] (McClellan Committee) / WKL.” The contact-sheet caption reads “Senate Investigating Subcommittee hearing on Crisis…Joseph Valachi.” The record gives the date as 27 September 1963 and the place as Washington, D.C.
The title was devised by Library staff. “Mafioso” and “of the Genovese crime family” are the Library’s words, and this archive does not place Valachi on any family chart from them. The photograph shows the hearing; it is not a record of what he said. The printed hearing volume is filed as Part 1 of the hearings, and his testimony of that day is at 27 September 1963.
The photograph is in the U.S. News & World Report Magazine Photograph Collection. The copy stored here is the Library’s service JPEG.
