The Library of Congress titles this photograph “[Mafioso Joseph Valachi of the Genovese crime family, testifying about organized crime and the Mafia at a hearing of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs (McClellan Committee), as man points to chart of Mafia organizations] / TOH.” The record gives the date as 1 October 1963 and the place as Washington, D.C. It transcribes the chart’s label as “Masseria-Maranzano War and evolution of gnag [sic] control - 1930 to present.”
The title was devised by Library staff, and its description of Valachi is the Library’s. The record does not name the man pointing. This page does not transcribe the names on the chart, and nothing on it is copied onto a family chart here.
The photograph is in the U.S. News & World Report Magazine Photograph Collection. The copy stored here is the Library’s service JPEG.
