- A record of the Department of Justice (Record Group 60, series "Photographs of Agency Personnel," NAID 597377), local identifier 60-NP-319. A United States government work, public domain under 17 U.S.C. § 105. The National Archives catalog marks use "Unrestricted."
The National Archives catalogs this item under the plain title “John Dillinger,” dated March 12, 1934, in Record Group 60, General Records of the Department of Justice. The scan is the full face of Identification Order No. 1217 of the Division of Investigation, issued by J. Edgar Hoover, Director, under the National Motor Vehicle Theft Act.
The order prints the description (age 31, height 5 feet 7-1/8 inches, weight 153 pounds), the photograph “taken January 25, 1934,” and the criminal record from a 1924 Indiana State Reformatory commitment to the Crown Point escape of March 3, 1934. Its last paragraph states that the U.S. Marshal at Chicago holds a warrant charging him with transporting Sheriff Lillian Holley’s Ford V-8 from Crown Point to Chicago. That is the charge as of March 12, 1934.
This copy carries no CANCELLED stamp; the FBI’s copy does. The text of the two is the same as far as both scans can be read.
