A photograph in the Records of the U.S. Coast Guard (Record Group 26), series "Photographs of Activities, Facilities, and Personalities" (NAID 513164), file unit "Prohibition Era 1924; Radio; Regattas & Parades; Refugees." The item reads "Use Restriction: Unrestricted." The series note says: "Fewer than one percent of photographs in this series are credited to commercial sources, and may have copyright or other use restrictions." No commercial credit appears on this item; a Coast Guard photograph is a United States government work, public domain under 17 U.S.C. § 105. The stored copy is an 1,800-pixel downsample of the catalog's scan.

The National Archives catalog title is “Coast Guard Destroyer BEALE,” local identifier 26-G-06-20-60-X-1. The catalog description reads: “This image depicts the Coast Guard Destroyer BEALE chasing a rum-running vessel in the North Atlantic.” The print shows a four-stack destroyer at a distance on open sea and, at the right, a two-masted vessel under sail; neither is named on the print. The catalog gives 20 June 1960 as the production date, matching the local identifier; that is decades after the destroyers’ Prohibition service, and this page does not take it as the date the picture was taken.

The item is in Record Group 26, file unit “Prohibition Era 1924; Radio; Regattas & Parades; Refugees.” The Coast Guard Historian’s article filed here says refurbished Navy destroyers entered Coast Guard service in 1924. The catalog names no officer, crew member or captured vessel, and this page does not.
