Release of January 11, 2007. It announces a criminal complaint charging John Thomas Ambrose, a deputy United States Marshal, with disclosing information about Nicholas Calabrese while Calabrese was in the federal witness security program.
The release says Nicholas Calabrese admitted he was a “made” member of the “Chicago Outfit,” agreed in 2002 to cooperate against alleged Outfit members including his brother Frank Calabrese, Sr., and the brothers James and Michael Marcello, and could testify about 16 murders he took part in and 22 others. It cites the case as U.S. v. Nicholas Calabrese, et al., 02 CR 1050, with trial then scheduled for May 2007.
A complaint is an allegation, and the release’s descriptions of the Calabreses and Marcellos are the government’s. The Seventh Circuit’s 2012 opinion in United States v. Ambrose records the conviction that followed.
