On the record
- 1928-11-04 — The Washington Times of 7 November 1928 (International News Service) reports that police sought "the men who were in room 349 of the Park Central Hotel Sunday night when Rothstein was shot through the abdomen." The Evening Star of 5 November (Associated Press) reports that detectives said he went to the hotel room from a Broadway restaurant in answer to a telephone message.
- 1928-11-05 — The Evening Star of 5 November 1928 (Associated Press) reports that he lay "in a serious condition in Polyclinic Hospital with a bullet wound in his abdomen" and "gave the police no aid in their search for his assailants."
- 1928-11-06 — The Evening Star of 6 November 1928 (Associated Press) reports that he "died today refusing ... to reveal the identity of his slayer." As background it says he had been "once charged with having "fixed" the 1919 world series" and was "indicted in connection with the Fuller-McGee brokerage bankruptcy case"; these are charges the wire story recalls, not findings.
- 1928-11-30 — The Washington Daily News of 30 November 1928 (United Press) reports that a district attorney expected indictments that day of George McManus and two others in the killing. The page reports a prosecutor's statement before any indictment.
Every line on this page comes from a 1928 newspaper page filed in this archive, as the wire services reported it at the time. No FBI, National Archives or court record about Rothstein has been found. The papers repeat police theories and Broadway gossip about a gambling debt as the motive; this page does not.
The outcome of the prosecution in his killing is not covered by any record filed here. No record filed on this page states a family, a rank, or a role in any organization.
