Front page of the New Britain Herald, Friday, 17 May 1929; the masthead carries “News of the World by Associated Press.” A photograph captioned “AL CAPONE” runs under the label “‘Scarface Al’ Jailed,” and the story below it is headed “Al Capone Jailed in Philadelphia,” with the deck “Given Year in Jail for Carrying Concealed Weapons.” It is datelined Philadelphia, May 17; the Chicago reaction paragraph that follows carries the AP mark.

The story says Capone, “notorious Chicago gangster,” was sentenced to one year in the county prison for carrying a concealed deadly weapon, and that Frank Cline, “Capone’s reputed body guard,” received the same sentence. “Capone and Cline arrived here yesterday from Atlantic City.” Detectives picked them up leaving a motion-picture house; each carried a .38 pistol. It adds: “Before he was sentenced to jail, Capone told Director Schofield, of public safety, that he had just fixed up a ‘peace pact’ between rival bootleg gangs of Chicago, ending the war which has resulted in wholesale killings by gunmen.”

This page places Capone in Atlantic City before the arrest and reports his own remark about a peace pact. It does not name a meeting in Atlantic City or anyone who attended one, and this archive takes no such fact from it. The same arrest is reported in the Evening Star, page 1 and page 4; a United Press story on an Atlantic City meeting ran in the Milwaukee Leader of 21 May 1929.
