Page 8 of the New-York Tribune, Friday, 28 January 1910. The story reports testimony at the federal counterfeiting trial of eight men before Judge Ray. The principal government witness, Antonio Comito, testified that he printed counterfeit notes at a farm near Highland, N.Y., and that “Giuseppi Morello” and “Ignacio Lupo” (the paper’s spellings) threatened him. The paper names Assistant United States Attorney Abel I. Smith for the government and Mr. Towns among defence counsel. The same page notes that bankruptcy proceedings against Lupo were postponed because he was on trial.

This is one witness’s testimony as the paper reported it. The Second Circuit later wrote that the government’s case “depended upon” the informer and his companion, “corroborated in many particulars by other witnesses and by circumstances” (189 F. 305). The Secret Service’s report of early January 1910 records agents’ dealings with Comito three weeks before the trial (NARA 151196549).
