- A wanted notice issued by the Division of Investigation, U.S. Department of Justice, over the name of J. Edgar Hoover, Director. A United States government work, public domain under 17 U.S.C. § 105. The order is a federal publication; the two photographs printed on it are not credited and were not separately rights-checked. The stored copy was captured from the image on the FBI's Bonnie and Clyde history page.
The order is headed “Identification Order No. 1227, May 21, 1934,” Division of Investigation, U.S. Department of Justice, under the title “National Motor Vehicle Theft Act.” It has two WANTED columns. The left names “Mrs. Roy Thornton, aliases Bonnie Barrow, Mrs. Clyde Barrow, Bonnie Parker”; the right names “Clyde Champion Barrow, aliases Clyde Barrow, Roy Bailey, Jack Hale, Eldin Williams, Elvin Williams.” Each column gives a description, relatives and a criminal record; Barrow’s record refers the reader to Identification Order No. 1211 of October 24, 1933.
The text at the foot states that the two “constantly travel together and extreme caution must be exercised by arresting officers as they are wanted in connection with assault and murder of officers,” and that a complaint was filed at Dallas on May 20, 1933 charging them with transporting a Ford coupe, the property of Dr. E. L. Damron of Effingham, Illinois, from Dallas to Pawhuska, Oklahoma, on or about September 16, 1932. The federal charge is the stolen-car charge; the rest is the Division’s warning as of May 21, 1934.
The FBI’s history page says both were shot to death by officers in an ambush near Sailes, Louisiana on May 23, 1934. The relatives’ street addresses printed on the order are not repeated or mapped here.
