This testimony is printed in Part 18 of the committee’s hearings, from page 78. Senator Lester C. Hunt’s subcommittee sat in executive session in Room 325-326 of the Hotel Traymore, Atlantic City, on Friday, July 6, 1951; committee counsel is printed as Mr. Lane. The witness said he had come to Atlantic City about 31 years earlier. His home address is printed on page 78 and is not reproduced here. The stored image is page 94.
On page 94 counsel asks: “Who was the head of the Republican organization in Atlantic County in the early thirties?” Orman: “Enoch L. Johnson.” Lane: “Otherwise known as ‘Nockey’ Johnson?” Orman: “That is right, sir.” He says he knew him “Fairly well” and would help him “Because he was a friend of mine.” When counsel remarks that Johnson “is a great deal older than you are,” Orman answers: “Much older. He has gone into his seventies.” Asked whether Johnson had done anything for him, he answers “Nothing.”
The spelling “Nockey” is the printed transcript’s. The name and the description of Johnson’s party position are counsel’s question and a witness’s answer, not a committee finding. The Senate later reported Orman for contempt (S. Rept. 82-777). This page is one of the records on which this archive identifies the “Johnson” of the 1942 and 1943 tax opinions with Enoch L. Johnson.
