The National Archives catalog titles this page “JOE STEIN - Alcatraz Number 319 - Warden’s Notebook.” The placard in the photograph reads “U. S. Penitentiary Alcatraz 319.”

The classification committee’s “Reason for Transfer” reads: “Subject was a member of the well known ‘Purple Gang’ and although he is no leader it is apparent that he would be a willing member of any organized group of agitators or any other disturbing influence in a institution.” That is the committee’s opinion. The page says he was born in Russia; the catalog gives New York City. Both are recorded here as the sources print them.
