The National Archives catalog titles this page “JACK SELBIN - Alcatraz Number 326 - Warden’s Notebook”; the catalog description gives the name as Jack Robert “Ziggy” Selbin. The placard in the photograph reads “U. S. Penitentiary Alcatraz 326.”
As typed: name Jack Selbin, No. 326, received Aug. 6, 1936 from Leavenworth, age 42, date of birth 2/17/94. Offense “Int. Rev-Consp.,” dated April 15, 1936; sentence “6 years & $20,000 fine,” marked with a note: “Original term was eight years: on June 30th, 1938 an order was entered by court amending sentence to read six (6) years.” District sentenced “E/Michigan - Detroit.” Co-defendants: “Sam Fleisher, Harry Fleisher and Joe Stein, now at Alcatraz, John J. Gettleson sentenced to a term of 2 years.” The criminal history lists an arrest in Los Angeles in 1925 with a San Quentin sentence, an arrest for investigation in Minneapolis in 1929, and the 1935 arrest by the United States Marshal at Detroit on the present offense. A stamp reads “Transferred to USP Leavenworth, Sept. 12, 1939.”
The classification committee’s “Reason for Transfer” reads: “Subject is a member of the widely publicized ‘Purple Gang’ and the reputation of this gang of hoodlums being what it is, it is only reasonable to assume that he would willingly become involved in most any type of disturbance or agitation.” That is the committee’s opinion. The 1932 Detroit Bureau of Investigation list in the Purple Gang file names a “Zigie Selbin” and a “Zizzie Selbin”; no record filed here says either is this man.
