Afternoon session of October 15, 1963, printed pages 549 to 562 of Part 2. Colonel Walter E. Stone, superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police, testified with Lieutenant Joseph J. McCauley and Corporal James W. Mullen. Stone said he had been a police officer for 31 years, 27 of them with the Providence police.

Stone’s statement says: “Raymond L. Patriarca was born on March 17, 1908, in Worcester, Mass.” It says his record began in 1926 and lists arrests, and that “To the Rhode Island State Police and the Providence Police Department this man is the controlling force behind organized crime in Rhode Island and New England.” Asked for convictions, Stone answered: “The FBI record, Mr. Chairman, shows five convictions.” He then named alleged associates in Rhode Island. Asked whether those names were on the chart, he said they were, and the chairman ruled: “Let that chart be made exhibit No. 53, and printed in the record insofar as it can be.” The chart faces page 551.

Counsel Donald F. O’Donnell then filed “a short memorandum which summarizes the testimony of Ray Patriarca, who appeared before the Senate Select Committee on Improper Activities in the Labor-Management Field on February 11, 1959,” as Exhibit 55. The record says it “may be found in the files of the subcommittee”; it is not printed in this volume.

These are a police official’s statements and allegations to a Senate subcommittee, not findings of a court. Quotations follow the OCR text layer of the NCJRS scan. The chart itself is a police and staff exhibit, and its labels are not copied onto any family page.
