On the record

  • 1950–1951 — Called before the Kefauver Committee (Part 5, pp. 1371–1375), he gave his name and a Cicero address and refused all other questions, including whether he knew Anthony Accardo: "I will refuse to answer all questions on the grounds it may tend to incriminate me."
  • 25 April 1968 — Aiuppa v. United States, 393 F.2d 597 (10th Cir. 1968), affirmed his jury conviction for unlawful possession and transportation of migratory birds, after an earlier appeal had ordered the "contraband [560 frozen mourning doves]" suppressed and a new trial held.
  • 24 February 1986 — United States v. Spilotro, 786 F.2d 808 (8th Cir. 1986): "The government specifically alleged that appellant Aiuppa and defendants Joseph Lombardo and Frank Peter Balistrieri used their influence with certain trustees" of the Teamsters pension fund to obtain the loan for Allen Glick's casino purchase. Aiuppa and Cerone were found guilty by a jury on January 21, 1986.
  • 8 October 1987 — United States v. Cerone, 830 F.2d 938 (8th Cir. 1987), summarizing the Government's charge: "Aiuppa was the boss of the Chicago group, with Cerone as its underboss."
  • 8 October 1987 — The same opinion: "Aiuppa and Cerone were sentenced to consecutive prison terms totalling twenty and one-half years"; the convictions were affirmed.

The heading follows the 1987 caption. The Kefauver contents list him as “Aiuppa, Joseph, Cicero, Ill.”; the 1986 opinion prints Joseph P. Aiuppa.

The family and role lines repeat the Eighth Circuit’s description of the Government’s charge, not a finding by the court. A 1959 FBI memorandum in the Accardo Vault file also mentions a position held by “JOE AIUPPA in Cicero”; it is a third-hand account and is not used here. No opened record gives his birth or death date.
