Hearings, S. Res. 202 (81st Cong.), Part 5: Illinois (GPO 1951)
Rights
A work of the United States Congress, printed by the Government Printing Office. Public domain in the United States. 17 U.S.C. § 105. The scan is of a GPO printing; Internet Archive marks it not in copyright.

Exhibit No. 60, printed at page 1407, is headed “Subject: Jones Bros., Clifford Davis, Theodore Roe, Idaho-Maine Club.” It says: “The following information was obtained from the records furnished by Theodore Roe, which sets out the gross and net earnings for the years” from 1939 “through June 30, 1950,” and gives a line for each year under the names Jones Bros. and Idaho and Maine Club. A note lists the partners: “Partners of Jones Bros. are as follows: Harriet Jones, Edward Jones, George Jones, McKassack Jones,” and “Partners of Idaho and Maine Club are as follows: Clifford Davis, Theodore Roe, George P. Jones, Edward Jones, Harriet Jones, Mack Jones (deceased).” The OCR separates the money columns unreliably, so the figures are not transcribed here; read them on the page image.

The table was put to Roe during his evening testimony of 19 December 1950, when the reporter said “The next exhibit number is 60.” Counsel told him the figures were “taken off your books and records which were examined through your accountant.” Roe answered: “If the records show that, that must be what it is,” and of the last three years, “I imagine that is correct. Of course, we haven’t checked up, we never check up” (his testimony).

Exhibit No. 61, at page 1408, is a table whose OCR is unreadable, and the testimony filed here does not describe it, so its contents are not stated. Exhibit No. 62, at page 1409, was offered later that evening, during the testimony of a Dallas police lieutenant (Butler), as “this chart of the policy wheel, 1945 to 1950, Chicago, Ill.; which is a chart made up from the information which is in the files of the committee.” Asked about the $150,000,000 in its centre, counsel said: “That is the estimated play over a period of 5 years of all the policy wheels which have been in operation during that time,” adding that it “was accumulated from other information that we have received from sources and from examination of the records of some wheels and returns.” The chart is a graphic and is described here only as the testimony describes it.

These are committee staff exhibits. The partnership lists are the staff’s reading of Roe’s records; the $150,000,000 is a staff estimate, not an audited figure. The note “Mack Jones (deceased)” is the only statement of a death among these names in the volume as read.
